Owls announce Grassroots Community Scheme

13 December 2014

Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to announce a brand new Grassroots Community Scheme geared towards making the youngsters of today supporters of tomorrow.

At the heart of the new scheme are schoolchildren, junior football teams and youth groups based in Sheffield and across South Yorkshire.

The Grassroots Community Scheme invites groups of young people of all backgrounds to engage with Sheffield Wednesday, who will offer significant benefits via the project, including discounted match tickets with cashback and money can’t buy experiences on the Hillsborough pitch.

Group participants can watch the Owls in the Championship for just £5 while adults pay only £20 – and then receive cashback for their club, school or organisation.

Juniors will also be able to participate in one of four great pitch activities during their matchday experience at Hillsborough, including:

Forming the Guard of Honour as the team walk out onto the pitch

Becoming a Player Escort as the team walk out onto the pitch

Shaking the giant Sheffield Wednesday shirt in the centre circle in the build-up to kick-off

Joining the Team Parade walking around the pitch at half time and be welcomed by 20,000 supporters

Sheffield Wednesday Chief Operating Officer Paul Bell said: “It is vital that we continue to enhance the strong family values of our club and the launch of our Grassroots Community Scheme provides the perfect platform to do so.

“First and foremost, we are embracing the young people within our community, giving them the chance to attend matches with their team mates or class mates and in addition, giving those youngsters the opportunity to be part of the matchday itself.

“We are proud to announce this project and hopefully look forward to its success for many years to come.”

Matt Handley, Football Development Officer at the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA, welcomed the Owls’ Grassroots Community Scheme and added:

“We fully support and endorse this Sheffield Wednesday community initiative. It’s great to see a local professional club engage with the grassroots community and more specifically local youngsters.

“The activities with which the youngsters can be involved are exciting and excellent examples of engagement.

“Overall, the scheme represents the ideal opportunity for Sheffield Wednesday FC to further embed themselves within their local community.”

The Sheffield Wednesday Grassroots Community Scheme is guaranteed to create memories to last a lifetime with juniors and family members alike and is open to all applicants.

The initiative will be showcased at the Owls’ home fixture against Wolves today before the official launch when Wednesday host Bolton on Saturday 17 January.
