Owls at the last

27 July 2013

Wednesday posted a 1-1 draw against local rivals Chesterfield at The Proact Stadium on Saturday.

Hamza Bencherif gave the home side a first half lead but Chris Maguire struck at the death to ensure the Owls made the short hop back to Sheffield with something in the travel bag.

The game was the Owls’ final pre-season contest of the summer ahead of the new campaign and one that the visitors bossed in the main but just could not find the breakthrough in front of goal.

Dave Jones took the chance to hand a maiden start in the final third to new signing Atdhe Nuhiu, who joined the Owls on Thursday.

The big man looked lively in the early exchanges and fashioned the first opening, firing into the side netting on ten minutes after escaping his marker.

Moments later, Nuhiu was a whisker away from finishing a teasing cross from Liam Palmer that ex-Owl Drew Talbot almost hit into his own goal.

Palmer then linked up well with Chris Maguire to tee up Paul Corry, whose low shot was smothered by Tommy Lee.

Wednesday continued to dominate until the hosts took the lead on 29 minutes completely against the run of play.

Gary Roberts found space down the right to swing a curling ball into the danger zone and Bencherif glanced a firm header across Chris Kirkland and into the far corner.

Wednesday could have equalised on 56 minutes when Jermaine Johnson rounded Lee and crossed for Corry but the Irishman was slightly off balance in attempting to plant home a header and the ball fell wide.

Nuhiu tested Lee with an angled drive as the Owls pushed for an equaliser, before the new recruit went closer still with a firm header from Liam Palmer’s deep cross.

Youngster Charlie Dawes, fresh from scoring for the Under-21s on Friday night, came on for his full debut, while Nuhui departed to warm applause from the travelling fans.

Chesterfield looked to close the game when Jimmy Ryan went close with a header and Wednesday responded with a daisycutter from Caolon Lavery that trickled wide before the Owls deservedly levelled at the last.

Maguire picked up possession 20 yards from goal on 88 minutes and looked up to strike a fierce effort past Lee and in off the far post to give Wednesday a share of the spoils.
