Sheffield Wednesday have signed midfielder Ross Barkley from Premiership side Everton.

The highly rated youngster joins the Owls on a month-long loan deal.

Barkley rose rapidly through the academy ranks at Goodison Park and represented the Everton Under-18s whilst just 15-years-old.

He progressed on to the England international stage at Under-16 level before moving up to the Under-17s, for whom he played in the Three Lions’ triumphant 2010 European Championship campaign.

Barkley penned his first professional contract with Everton after turning 17 in December 2010 and made his maiden senior start at Goodison Park the following August.

The 18-year-old went on to play for the England Under-21s before signing a new long term contract with the Toffees, tying him to Goodison until 2016.

Owls boss Dave Jones said: “We have been chasing Ross for some time and I’m really pleased to have him on board.

“This is as big as the Rodri signing for me because this lad is a real quality player.

“He’s energetic, good in the air and a box to box player who can score a goal.”

Barkley has been allocated squad number 24 at Hillsborough.
