The Owls’ Under-18s posted a well-earned point against local rivals Sheffield United in their last league game of the season on Wednesday at Shirecliffe.

Simon Hanna gave Wednesday a first half lead but the visitors were pegged back at the last by Daniel Cockerline to hand the Blades a share of the spoils.

The Owls, though, could have been out of sight by then but Hanna lashed a second half penalty over the crossbar after a foul by Ioan Evans.

Coach Steve Haslam said: “The boys performed well today in their final league match although result-wise it was disappointing to concede so late on and only get a draw.

“I thought we competed well against an older and more physical side and particularly in the first half we showed good bravery to get on the ball and play.

“Once again we fielded a very young side with a lot of first year scholars in action and two Under-16 lads in the back four but I thought they rose to the challenge and the experience that the young players have had with the Under-18s this season will stand them in good stead.

“Overall, I have been pleased with how the boys have developed over the season and as ever we will work to improve the players as they strive to become our first team players of the future.”
