Owls fans encouraged to ‘Move More’

8 June 2016

Sheffield Wednesday fans are being encouraged to get involved in a physical activity project which aims to get 50,000 people on the move in the run up to the Rio Olympics.

The initiative, ‘Move More’, is a project from the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine in Sheffield and is working with more than 20 local organisations, including the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, to get active and to record their physical activity during July to see how many combined minutes the city can clock up.

Movements can be logged on your smart phone by a new and free Move More Sheffield app. Once downloaded, the app will automatically track activity and clock up users Move More Minutes, for each minute of activity.

Amongst the project’s challenges includes the ‘Steel City Move More Derby’ where fans from Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United will be invited to the match, ‘Move More for Goals’ by pledging their football allegiance via the app or website. Fans will be able to use their active minutes to score goals for their chosen team. The scores will be constantly updated and broadcast across the city via social media.

The winning club will be awarded the Steel City Move More Cup which will be presented at the first home game of the 2016/17 season.

Fans can also get involved in a range of activities across the city:

• Members bring a friend for free at Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre, Wisewood Leisure Centre and Thorncliffe Leisure Centre.
• Trail running session, Longshaw Estate
• Leisure swimming at Hillsborough Leisure Centre
• Badminton and table tennis sessions, Concord Sports Centre
• Community rounders, Ruskin Park
• Try out Athletics at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield
• Ice skating session, iceSheffield
• Olympic Exercise Demonstration and Health Information Fayre, Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre

The Move More app is now available to download on Google Play and the Apple Store.
