A special partnership between the club’s Community Programme, a Sheffield Sixth Form College and a National Citizen project has launched with the help of two Sheffield Wednesday players and two South Yorkshire champion boxers.
The partnership between the Community Programme, Longley Park Sixth Form College and the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme will see the students from the college participate in the project.
Owls NCS ambassadors, Liam Palmer and Glenn Loovens, were joined by Commonwealth bantamweight title holder Ross Burkinshaw and European, Commonwealth and IBF World Youth Super-Bantamweight champion Kid Galahad for the launch of the partnership.
NCS is a government-funded youth programme designed to bring together people aged 15-17 from a wide range of backgrounds and teach them how to communicate and work as a team while contributing to their local community.
This academic year, more than 100 students from the College participated in the project which has now seen them become qualified first aiders and gaining skills for their CVs.
Lucy Shuttleworth, the NCS co-ordinator at Sheffield Wednesday, said: “NCS is a great project that adds something different to the development of the students that they might not get at college.
“It’s great to have support from Longley Park Sixth Form College and we look forward to welcoming more of their students onto the project.
“We’d also like to say thank you to the players and boxers for the support on the project. The programme is getting bigger every year and we’re looking forward to working with the College.”
