Owls left frustrated by late blow

19 August 2014

  • Wednesday stunned by substitute's strike
  • Lions hit back in 94th minute
  • But Owls still unbeaten in new campaign

Frustration was the key word for Stuart Gray in his post-match press conference following the 1-1 draw with Millwall on Tuesday night.

After Shaun Williams spurned a late penalty, the Lions were seemingly heading back to the capital empty handed after Chris Maguire hit Wednesday into the lead.

But the Londoners levelled right at the last through substitute Magaye Gueye to leave the Owls thinking what might have been.

Gray said: “I’m frustrated, of course, we all are. But I’ve said to the players they will experience huge highs and lows throughout the season.

“Tonight is a massive low because it feels like a defeat but the players will bounce back and we go to Middlesbrough still unbeaten on Saturday.”

Gray questioned the penalty awarded to Millwall, arguing that his side should have also received a spot-kick, if not in the first half then certainly the second.

Jacques Maghoma and Stevie May each had claims waived away and the Owls’ head coach said:

“For their penalty, I thought it was a coming together of two grown men going for the same ball.

“I don’t think they even appealed for it. I thought if Millwall got a penalty, then we should have had one when their goalkeeper challenged Stevie May in a similar situation.

“Jacques Maghoma might also have had one in the first half.

“But the referee can only give what he thinks is the right decision and sometimes they go for you, sometimes they don’t.

“The good thing is that we put in a real shift, without playing as well as we have in previous games this season, and still came away with a point.

“But sometimes you have to win ugly and we should have managed the game better. I should be standing here talking about three points rather than one.”
