Owls midfielder Giles Coke pressed by Sheffield schoolchildren

22 October 2014

Aspiring reporters from a Sheffield College have visited Sheffield Wednesday to get a first-hand insight into the world of matchday journalism.

Year nine pupils, aged 14-16, visited the club to experience what it’s like to report a match, sample journalist matchday duties and interview players in the post-match press conference.

To make the day as realistic as possible, Owls star Giles Coke was put to the test in the media lounge, with challenging questions from the pupils.

Andrew Batten, Teaching Assistant from Westfield College, said: “We are so grateful to Sheffield Wednesday for facilitating such an insightful trip to Hillsborough. It really was a once in a lifetime experience for many of our pupils and with many of them supporting the Owls it was any supporters dream to interview a player like Giles.

“We were really impressed with the questions the pupils asked and we hope that, thanks to their visit to Sheffield Wednesday, will be inspired to work towards a career in sports journalism.”

As well as grilling the midfielder on his football career, the pupils toured the ground and gained backstage access into the dressing room and tunnel area.

Pupils also gained a career insight from Sheffield Wednesday’s Public Relations Officer Jade March on her job role and pathway into in the media team at the club.

The pupils also talked to Dan Potts, the Head of Education and Welfare at Sheffield Wednesday, who spoke about the club’s ever-expanding academy programme.
