Owls out of Under-21 Cup

20 October 2014

  • Wednesday lose 1-0 in Under-21 Cup
  • Dieseruvwe misses late penalty
  • Tigers edge Hillsborough clash

The Owls exited the Under-21 Cup at the first hurdle on Monday night, going down 1-0 to Premier League side Hull at Hillsborough.

A late goal from Karim Rossi was enough to separate the two although Wednesday had a swift opportunity to level but Manny Dieseruvwe missed a penalty.

All in all, the cup clash was a game of few chances, with Rhys McCabe and Franck Betra almost profiting for the hosts in the first half.

Hull hit back through a Calaum Jahraide Martin snapshot that flew narrowly wide and the same played forced a fine save from Joe Wildsmith after the break.

Little separated the teams as the contest entered the final stages but with 12 minutes to go, Rossi broke the deadlock with a looping header.

Two minutes later, though, the Owls were handed a lifeline when Rafa Floro was upended in the box but Rory Watson saved the spot kick from Dieseruvwe to ensure victory.

Owls: Wildsmith, Young, Floro, Croasdale (Hanna 84), De Havilland, Beatson, McCabe, Corry, Dieseruvwe, Meadows (Sanders 64), Betra
