Owls sign defender Matt Young

3 June 2014

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Southampton defender Matt Young.

The 20-year-old has agreed a one-year deal at Hillsborough.

Young began his footballing education with Tottenham Hotspur up to the age of 16 when the stopper signed scholarship forms at Southampton.

The defender impressed at St Mary’s and signed his first professional deal with the South Coast club in May 2012.

A former captain of the Saints Under-18s, Young was a regular in Southampton’s Development Squad during the 2013/14 campaign.

Primarily a right back, Young is comfortable in any position across the backline and he told swfc.co.uk:

“I came down to the club and had a trial, played in the games against Coventry and Barnsley and thankfully I’ve done enough to impress and I’m really pleased to be here.

“Everyone has made me feel welcome, training was lively and games were good.

“Southampton have some extremely talented players and when you play and train alongside them, they obviously rub off on you.

“I’ve played with players who pushed on into the first team there including the likes of Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers and good luck to them.

“Now I’m happy to be here and to take my own path.

“I want to get a good pre-season under my belt, show the gaffer what I can do and try to get in his thoughts for the start of the season.”
