Owls wait on Loovens decision

7 April 2016

Sheffield Wednesday will wait and see over the fitness of Owls captain Glenn Loovens.

The defender was substituted in the first half on Tuesday evening after picking up an ankle injury in the clash with Blackburn.

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal says the skipper has made progress but will leave it until Friday to make a decision.

Ahead of the trip to Bristol City, he said: “Tomorrow will be the last decision to see how he feels, today he is much better than yesterday and tomorrow we will take the decision after a talk with the medical department and with him.

“All the time in football it’s like you go into battle and after the battle which is 94 or 95 minutes, it’s very hard, very intensive.

“In the next day or next two days, the players have pains or a kick or the muscles are very tired.

“In the first 48 hours it is very difficult to check how the players feel. In the third day, which is Friday, you know exactly who will be near 100%.”

Sam Hutchinson is also making a recovery following a bout of illness and Carlos is confident the midfield man will be back in action sooner rather than later.

He added: “Sam is collecting energy, let’s see soon if he will be back, he doesn’t have the fever anymore which he had for 10-12 days.

“The body was weak but now he can recover but we must analyse him day by day and we expect that he can help the team soon as possible.”
