Report: Alfreton Town 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday

11 July 2015

The Owls kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw at National League North side Alfreton Town.

Sergiu Bus opened the scoring four minutes into the second period and Niall Heaton equalised 19 minutes from the end.

New head coach Carlos Carvalhal fielded two teams, one for each half, ensuring the whole of the travelling squad stored game time.

It was a warm and humid afternoon in Derbyshire, with the fixture played at a steady pace, and the Owls were in the driving seat for the most part.

Atdhe Nuhiu went close to bagging a headed goal 15 minutes in before Wednesday were dealt a blow just after the half-hour when skipper Glenn Loovens limped out of the action following a late challenge.

There was little in terms of goalmouth action and the second half provided much more of a spark.

Bus executed a smart shot on the turn and forced a fine save from Darcy O’Connor, moments before giving the Owls the lead on 49 minutes.

Ryan Croasdale sent Marco Matias in on goal and the new recruit squared for Bus to tap into an empty net.

Fellow new boy Jack Hunt whistled an angled drive over the crossbar, then Alfreton countered with Dan Bradley striking the woodwork after bursting run down the left.

Wednesday hit back with Croasdale unleashing from distance and O’Connor tipped over the bar – but the hosts promptly levelled against the run of play on 71 minutes.

Heaton found space down the left flank and advanced to drill a fierce shot beyond the diving Joe Wildsmith to give Town a share of the spoils.

Owls (first half): Dawson, Palmer, Loovens (Sasso 32), Lachman, Dielna, Meadows, Semedo, Helan, Lee, Nuhiu, Lavery

(second half): Wildsmith, Hunt, Sasso, Lees, Vermijl, Hutchinson, Melo, Lee (Wallace 72), Croasdale, Matias, Bus

Attendance: 1,547
