Report: Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Norwich City

25 October 2014

  • Owls post goalless draw with Norwich
  • Second clean sheet in a week for Wednesday
  • Keiren Westwood man of the match

Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich drew 0-0 at Hillsborough on Saturday, with goalkeeper Keiren Westwood taking the plaudits.

Westwood came to the Owls’ rescue on four separate occasions to ensure his side earned a point from this Championship clash.

The Republic of Ireland international proved the difference between the teams and although Wednesday enjoyed more than their fair share of possession, they couldn’t find a way through the Canaries’ defence.

The Owls were back on home soil for the second successive week and having posted a good draw at Brentford on Tuesday, were out to address their S6 form.

And they started on the front foot, dominating the early exchanges against a Norwich side looking to reignite their early season spark.

Stevie May headed just wide following a swift three-man move but Norwich countered a few minutes later and Westwood saved superbly from Lewis Grabban.

The Owls went on to ask more of the questions and Kieran Lee lashed a volley over the crossbar following a neat Atdhe Nuhiu knockdown.

As the first half developed, opportunities were few as the pattern of play just about favoured the hosts, although City did appear dangerous on the break.

The second period started in a similar fashion and Stuart Gray made a double substitution to shuffle his pack in the final third.

New recruit Gary Taylor-Fletcher came on with Royston Drenthe as Chris Maguire and Nuhiu were withdrawn.

And the impetus certainly stayed with Wednesday. Taylor-Fletcher had a half chance on 67 minutes after a fine pass from Claude Dielna before Liam Palmer smashed into the side-netting having taken a clever back heel from Stevie May into his stride.

But on 69 minutes, City came closest to breaking the deadlock. Gary O’Neil’s free kick found Cameron Jerome in space and his header seemed goalbound only for Westwood to delve into the top drawer and prevent the opening goal.

The Republic of Ireland international promptly repeated the feat moments later to deny substitute Nathan Redmond, whose blistering low drive was diverted past the post.

And if that were not enough, Westwood again kept the Owls in the game with 13 minutes to go, this time thwarting Jerome from close range.

It would have been harsh for Wednesday to lose the game and they duly held out to record another clean sheet – their second in a week and ninth of the season.

Owls: Westwood, Palmer, Loovens, Lees, Dielna (Maghoma 80), Maguire (Taylor-Fletcher 58), Semedo, Lee, Helan, Nuhiu (Drenthe 58), May

Norwich: Ruddy, Whittaker, Johnson (Redmond 67), Martin, Turner, Grabban, Howson, Jerome, Olsson, Tettey, Odjidja-Ofoe (O’Neil 46)
