Report: Sheffield Wednesday 5-0 St Mirren

1 August 2015

The Owls wrapped up their pre-season campaign with a convincing 5-0 win against Scottish outfit St Mirren.

Carlos Carvalhal’s new-look side were rampant at Hillsborough, with an Atdhe Nuhiu brace and goals from Vincent Sasso, Lewis McGugan and Marnick Vermijl putting Saints to the sword.

The friendly fixture was the last outing for Wednesday before the Championship curtain-raiser next weekend against Bristol City.

The Owls asked all the early questions and Sasso went close with a firm header from a Ross Wallace corner inside five minutes.

The hosts continued to press and were rewarded on 21 minutes. Wallace swung over another flag kick and after a scramble on the line, Sasso reacted sharply to stab home.

Wideman Wallace was the architect again when Wednesday doubled their lead eight minutes later. The Scot picked out Nuhiu with an accurate cross and the big man climbed to bury past Mark Ridgers.

Then, six minutes before the break, the Owls made it three. McGugan was felled on the edge of the area and dusted himself down to send a stunning free kick past the diving Ridgers.

Still there was time for Nuhiu to hit the post with another header before Wednesday went down the tunnel squarely in the driving seat.

And just four minutes into the second period, it was 4-0 as substitute Liam Palmer burst down the right and squared for Nuhiu to double his tally at the second attempt.

The visitors struggled to get into the Owls’ half and defended doggedly to keep the scoreline down.

Wednesday were shooting from all angles and new recruit came close to adding another, clipping just over the crossbar from a low Palmer feed.

And seven minutes from time, the fifth goal did come did arrive and it was arguably the pick of the bunch as Vermijl escaped two challenges before unleashing a rocket shot into the top corner.

Wednesday: Westwood (Wildsmith 61), Hunt (Palmer 46), Hutchinson (Semedo 66), Matias (May 66), Nuhiu (Joao 50), McGugan (Lee 66), Wallace (Lavery 46), Lees (De Havilland 80), Lopez (Bus 74), Helan (Vermijl 74), Sasso (Lachman 69)

Attendance: 9,330
