The Owls’ academy Under-14 age group will enter an international tournament in the Steel City this summer.
Sheffield is recognising its footballing heritage with the Youdan Trophy, which celebrates the oldest tournament in the world.
The Youdan Cup pre-dates the FA Cup by four years and was played only once in 1867 – the year of Wednesday’s formation.
Sheffield-based You-Are-The-Ref.com, the leading independent authority and education platform for match officials, are behind the creation of the tournament that will see invited youth teams at the Under-14 age group from as far away as Australia competing.
The original Youdan Cup was the brainchild of Thomas Youdan - a self-made Victorian who was behind Sheffield's celebrated Alexandra Theatre.
The final was played at Bramall Lane, the venue for the final of this summer’s tournament.
Thomas Youdan's only surviving relative, Dr Glyn Youdan, made the draw alongside former referee Keith Hackett for the Youdan Trophy before Sheffield United's play-off game last Friday against Swindon.
The Youdan Trophy competition is set to take place from Monday 27 July to Friday July 31. Group games will be played at Sheffield Hallam University's SportsPark and the final will take place at Bramall Lane on 31 July.
