Sheffield Wednesday ease to victory at York

12 July 2014

The Owls posted a comfortable 2-0 win over York at Bootham Crescent on Saturday.

In this the first of six friendly encounters for Stuart Gray’s side, it was standard pre-season fare with both sides easing back into the swing of things.

Wednesday finished on top courtesy of two first half strikes - the second of which from Chris Maguire was a real stunner after Ferni Ilesanmi had put through his own goal - in the sweltering North Yorkshire heat.

In terms of personnel, Gray and counterpart Nigel Worthington made the expected raft of changes as the second part of the game unfolded.

And with the aim to give most of the players their first taste of summer action, it was mission accomplished for the Owls and the Minstermen.

French trialist Achille Campion, partnering Gary Madine up front for Wednesday, saw little of the ball but looked neat and tidy in possession.

It was Maguire, though, who took a central role in both first half goals as the Owls went down the tunnel two to the good.

First, the Scot drilled in a fierce free kick full of zip on 27 minutes and the ball was inadvertently diverted into his own net by Ilesanmi.

Then, just after Madine almost doubled the lead just before half time, Maguire did so with a long range belter that positively flew past Jason Mooney almost on the whistle.

Substitute Caolan Lavery came close to a third just after the resumption but his angled effort was parried by Michael Ingham, who came on for Mooney for the second half.

The visitors continued to ask more of the questions and Atdhe Nuhiu showed a nice touch to deceive marker Keith Lowe but the defender recovered in the nick of time to deflect the big man’s hit over the crossbar.

Owls: Kirkland (Wildsmith (60), Palmer (Lee 46), Helan (Floro 60), Hutchinson (McCabe 46), Mattock (Young 82), Semedo (Sanders 75), Coke (Corry 69), Campion (Lavery 46), Madine (Nuhiu 46), Maguire (Antonio 46), Maghoma (Stobbs 60)
