Sheffield Wednesday stars back National Awareness Week

26 November 2014

Sheffield Wednesday stars have joined a new health campaign this November – and want you to help them!

Wednesday players Atdhe Nuhiu and Jeremy Helan are supporting national charity Saving Lives during their National HIV Testing Week, encouraging people to take the simple blood test that can keep them healthy.

The campaign, ‘Selfies Saving Lives’, has seen footballers and Olympic athletes join forces with people living with HIV and members of the general public in taking photos, putting them online – and urging people to #GetTested.

One in four people living with HIV don’t know they are infected. That means they can’t access today’s life-saving treatment, and may be passing on their infection to others.

Dr Steve Taylor, the charity’s Medical Director, said: “A simple blood test can change all this – and that’s where football clubs in. They can use their influence to educate people who may not otherwise think the message has anything to do with them.

“Taking a selfie might seem a simple thing to do, but the more of us that do it maybe the fewer people will be scared of what can be a life-saving test.”

If you want to volunteer to help us with this campaign, visit the Saving Lives website now – and get tweeting!
