Stuart Gray applauds Owls' application

12 August 2014

  • Owls ease past Notts County in Capital One Cup
  • 3-0 win for Wednesday at Hillsborough
  • Stuart Gray pleased with players' work rate

Glad for the win and glad to be in the hat for round two - that was the top and bottom of Stuart Gray’s press conference following the comfortable win over Notts County at Hillsborough.

The Owls eased past County 3-0 in round one of the Capital One Cup and the head coach enthused over the application of his players.

He said: “First and foremost I am pleased to get the win. We are in the hat for the next round and that’s what matters at this stage.

“I could sense in the warm-up that the players were at it and full credit to them because they put a real shift in and got their rewards.

“They came out of the blocks in style, got two goals, and we never lost control of the game.

“The early rounds of the cups can cause concerns in terms of application but there was never any danger of that tonight.”

Gray was also pleased with the fact that both strikers – Gary Madine and Atdhe Nuhiu – found the target, giving him a potential headache for the visit of Derby in the Championship on Saturday.

New signing Stevie May sat out the Notts County clash through suspension but will be available for his debut this weekend.

Gray added: “I want to see the strikers score goals and they both did that tonight.

“Of course, when your strikers score, it can give you food for thought for the next game.

“But that’s what managers want, a selection headache, because it means you have options.

“Chris Kirkland has a clean sheet tonight so I couldn’t have asked for any more at that end either.”
