Ten years on!

29 May 2015

It only seems like yesterday that 41,000 Wednesdayites travelled to the Welsh capital to roar the Owls on to victory in the League 1 play-off final.

Incredibly, ten years has past and today we can celebrate and look back fondly on that special day, as Wednesday returned to the Championship.

Hartlepool stood in the way of the Owls’ elevation to the second tier at the Millennium Stadium on 29 May 2005.

Jon-Paul McGovern gave Paul Sturrock’s side the lead on the stroke of half time but Pools hit back after the restart with Eifon Williams and Jon Daly putting Hartlepool ahead.

As the game entered its final stages, the Owls were on the brink of a heartbreaking defeat but nine minutes from time, that all changed.

Steve MacLean slammed home his 20th goal of the season from the spot, a result of Chris Westwood’s challenge on Drew Talbot that earned the defender a red card.

Into extra time the game went where Glenn Whelan steadied the nerves with a stunning strike to regain the Owls’ advantage and Wednesday made sure of promotion in the last minute.

Talbot won possession on the halfway line before motoring upfield, rounding Dimi Konstantopoulos and tapping home into the empty net to seal promotion.

To celebrate the ten-year anniversary, the class of 2005 returned to Hillsborough earlier this year in March for an event facilitated by the club’s Community Programme.

The club, along with players from the squad and supporters, re-lived those fantastic memories of a remarkable season.

During the evening, we spoke to a number of stars from the team and Wednesdayites can watch the video again below.
