Tigers stalemate

21 July 2013

Wednesday concluded their pre-season tour of Portugal with a goalless draw against newly-promoted Premiership side Hull in Albufeira.

The friendly on Saturday evening was a typically standard summer contest, with neither side taking a real grip of the game to earn victory.

The all-English clash was a contrast to the Braga friendly on Tuesday, as was Dave Jones’ starting line-up.

The Owls’ boss made a string of changes, handing starts to former Hull ace Anthony Gardner, Paul Corry and Michail Antonio, who partnered Jermaine Johnson up front.

And it was the pace in the Wednesday team going forward that posed the problems for Hull, as was evidenced on 38 minutes after what was a largely lacklustre first half.

Jeremy Helan burst through the middle to take a cute ball from Antonio into his stride and did everything right in rounding keeper Alan McGregor but ex-Owls defender Alex Bruce was alert to the danger and cleared off the line.

Prior to that, the nearest Hull came was when Robert Koren unleashed a fierce drive that Chris Kirkland comfortably smothered.

Hull saw claims for a penalty just after the restart denied when Fryatt went down in the area following a challenge by trialist Kamil Zayatte.

Thereafter, the rhythm of the friendly encounter altered in tandem with the raft of changes made by both managers.

Chances were few as the clock counted down but Dave Jones and counterpart Steve Bruce will take the positives of another 90 minutes under the belt as their respective preparations for the 2013/14 campaign continue.

Owls: Kirkland, Palmer, Gardner (Llera 50), Zayatte, Mattock, Prutton, Corry (Coke 70), McCabe (Semedo 70), Helan, J Johnson (Madine 50), Antonio (Maguire 60)
