Lees looks ahead after penning new four-year deal

Having signed a new four-year deal with Wednesday, Tom Lees has revealed his delight at extending at Hillsborough and his excitement for the future.

After a fantastic first season with the Owls, that saw Lees perform at the top of his game on a consistent basis, natural speculation arose over the summer with regard to the stopper.

But Lees was in no doubt as to where he saw his long term future and after positive talks with chairman Dejphon Chansiri and head coach Carlos Carvalhal, the central defender did not hesitate to extend until 2019.

He told swfc.co.uk: “There has been a fair bit of interest and speculation over the summer but the head coach and owner have sat down with me about extending the length of my deal.

“I really appreciate that they’ve done that. I was always happy to stay here and now we can put all the speculation to bed, so it’s fantastic.

“It’s a long commitment from both sides and that’s why we wanted to get it right.

“I want to go on record and thank the head coach who got the process going and the chairman for coming forward and sitting down with me.”

Looking to the future, Lees says the ambition of the club matched with the vision of the chairman fills him with much optimism for the coming years.

He added: “Sitting down with the owner yesterday, I talked to him at length and the way he spoke about the club was really encouraging.

“Over four years it could be really exciting. The first couple of months will be a tough test for us but we have got to stay strong, stick together and then hopefully build something special.”
