Under-18s edged out in final

22 July 2015

The Owls’ Under-18s were edged out 1-0 by Brentford in the final of the academy tournament in Portugal on Wednesday night.

The game was played in 35-degree heat, despite the 6.00pm kick-off, and an even affair unfolded under the Mediterranean sun.

So it came as no surprise when proceedings were decided by a penalty, which the Bees duly converted midway through the second half.

Wednesday pressed for an equaliser and created chances but to no avail as Brentford held on to take the plaudits.

Coach Steven Haslam told swfc.co.uk: “It was a tough game for the boys, they grafted right to the end and with a bit more quality in the final third I think we could have got something from the game.

“On a positive note, it's another step forward in terms of fitness levels and there were some bright individual performances.

“Overall, the tour has been a brilliant experience for the players and staff. We've got a lot of work into the players and the group have become closer for spending almost two weeks together.

“Finally, I would like to thank the Wednesdayites who came to our game tonight for their support."
