Under-18s right on course

31 August 2015

The Owls’ Under-18s posted a comprehensive 4-0 win over local rivals Barnsley at Middlewood Road.

Wednesday dominated much of the league contest and emerged comfortable winners, leaving coach Steven Haslam pleased with his side’s work.

He said: “I am really pleased because the boys have taken on board what we told them after we lost out to Sheffield United a couple of weeks ago having deserved to win.

“We said that’s football can go sometimes and it’s all about how they bounce back.

“Our two games since have seen convincing wins so I think they have gained the experience of using a negative to make a positive.”

Wednesday took the lead in the first half through an own goal following good work from Connor Kirby and George Hirst doubled the advantage before the break after an impressive 14-pass build-up.

Matt Penney teed up Connor O’Grady to put the game out of Barnsley’s reach midway through the second half before the provider turned goalscorer himself to apply the final coating of gloss.

Wednesday: Stachini, Kirby, O'Grady, Cook, Nicholson, Clarke (79), Hirst, Duffy (Preston 60), Penney (Centeno 68)
