Under-21s: Owls 0-2 Barnsley

26 January 2015

  • Owls Under-21s defeated by Barnsley
  • Middlewood Road clash finishes 2-0 to the Reds
  • Lewis Buxton makes Owls comeback

The Wednesday Under-21s were defeated 2-0 by Barnsley on Monday afternoon at Middlewood Road.

Reds winger George Maris hit both goals for the visitors in a cold afternoon at the Owls’ training complex.

After a positive start for the hosts, Barnsley hit the front in their first attack of the game.

The Reds broke quickly on the counter and Maris finished confidently past Joe Wildsmith to bag his first goal of the contest.

Jack Stobbs went close before the break but flashed his free kick inches wide as Wednesday dominated possession, without any joy in the final third.

Following the restart, Stobbs delivered dangerously into the box but just ahead of Caolan Lavery as the hosts went in search of an equaliser.

But as Wednesday pressed forward, Barnsley once again struck on the counter and Maris drilled home in off the post to double the Reds’ lead.

It began to turn into frustrating afternoon for the Owls as Lavery saw his close range header saved by former Owl Adam Davies and Paul Corry had his stinging drive blocked on the edge of the box.

Ryan Croasdale was then denied from a superb Stobbs’ centre and, after good approach by Wednesday, Simon Hanna did well outside the box to work a yard of space but blasted over the top before Maris went close to registering his treble.

The midfielder almost wrapped up Barnsley’s afternoon in style but saw Cameron Dawson save twice and had a third attempt blocked on the line.

Owls: Wildsmith (Dawson 46), Buxton (Brown 60), Floro, De Havilland, Sanders, Hanna, Stobbs, Croasdale, Lavery, Meadows (Duffy 56), Corry
