'We didn't deserve that'

17 December 2014

Steven Haslam reflected on the Under-18s’ FA Youth Cup defeat to Stoke and insisted the 5-0 reverse was harsh.

The Owls’ started Tuesday’s third round tie apace, creating numerous chances in the opening 20 minutes.

But Stoke broke and scored with their first attack and from that point, the game changed its course.

Haslam said: “We started the game brightly and could have scored from our set plays but we didn’t take our chances.

“Goals change games and when Stoke scored, it was against the run of play but it shows that you must take your chances.

“It led to a crazy spell of four goals in 22 minutes and I felt for the boys because we didn’t deserve that.

“When they scored after half time, the game was out of reach but the players didn’t let their heads drop.

“At 5-0 up, Stoke could have cruised to the final whistle but we didn’t let them do that and we deserved a consolation goal at least but it wasn’t to be.”
