Wednesday disability programme expands

29 January 2015

The Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme have joined up with a local community group to help expand its disability football team, Ability Counts.

The partnership will work with the Burton Street Foundation‘s current disability team with the aim of setting up a team to represent the Community Programme in the Hallamshire FA Ability Counts League.

The new link-up comes as part of the Community Programme’s ongoing work with the Burton Street Foundation and is in place to improve participants’ health, fitness and confidence.

As well as having weekly sessions with fully qualified coaches from the programme, the new group are also looking forward to a stadium tour and a matchday trip!

Matt Bray, Social Inclusion Manager for the Community Programme, said: “It’s been great to work with the Foundation and it’s been really rewarding to see the participants benefit from the programme.”

Simon Lonsdale, Children Services Team Leader at Burton Street, said: “Parents have praised the generosity of Sheffield Wednesday and constantly express their gratitude for the opportunity and time donated by the trainers from Sheffield Wednesday.

“We are so grateful for the programme that Wednesday are running and can’t place value on the fun and fitness they have brought to our organisation.”
