Wildsmith crowned academy Player of the Year

30 April 2014

Joe Wildsmith has been named as the Sheffield Wednesday academy Player of the Year.

The promising goalkeeper landed the award, presented by first team goalkeeping coach Andy Rhodes, following an outstanding season of achievement.

First up, after impressing sufficiently through the academy ranks, Wildsmith earned his maiden professional deal and penned a two and a half year deal at Hillsborough.

The talented teenager went on to post a raft of outstanding performances for the Owls’ Under-18s and Under-21s that led to a loan move to broaden his experience.

Wildsmith made the short hop to Conference side Alfreton Town, where he duly rose his stock.

In addition, the Sheffielder received a coveted League Football Award for successfully aligning academic studies to his burgeoning football career.

He told swfc.c.uk: “It is a great privilege for me to win the academy Player of the Year award.

“It rounds off a great year for me and I have learned so much. I would like to thank everyone at Sheffield Wednesday for the support they have given me.

“I feel as though I have made a lot of progress this season, which culminated with the loan spell with Alfreton.

“To get a taste for first team football was a really valuable experience and makes me all the more determined to continue my development and aim towards the first team squad with Wednesday.”
