Yesterdays: Owls make record start at Craven Cottage

21 January 2015

Fans witnessed a remarkable start to the game at Craven Cottage on this day 54 years ago.

The Owls met Fulham in the Division One clash and did not have a single touch of the ball before finding themselves a goal to the good!

Incredibly, after just 30 seconds, Fulham defender Alan Mullery put through his own goal in record quick time to start a disastrous day for the hosts.

Wednesday went on to claim a 6-1 win over the Whites as further strikes from Keith Ellis (2), John Fantham, Alan Finney and Tom McAnearney compounded the Cottagers’ misery.

The victory in front of 17,920 at Craven Cottage sent Wednesday up to third in Division One but the Owls would go on to finish as runners-up to Tottenham Hotspur by eight points.

Fantham finished with 23 goals, pipping Ellis as the club’s top scorer who registered 19 in that same campaign.
