Yesterdays: Owls triumph at Griffin Park

20 October 2014

Ahead of Sheffield Wednesday's trip to Brentford on Tuesday, swfc.co.uk takes a look back at the Owls' last visit to Griffin Park in the 2011/12 campaign.

Almost two and half years ago, Wednesday travelled to Brentford for the penultimate League One game of the regular 2011/12 season.

The Owls went into the game in third position, one point behind city rivals Sheffield United, but still well in the hunt for automatic promotion with two games to play.

And what a memorable afternoon it turned out to be.

Keith Treacy struck first blood before the break.

While the Bees were lining up to defend an in-swinging centre, Treacy had different ideas and curled the ball into the net at Simon Moore’s near post.

Clayton Donaldson was a handful for the home side and forced a top drawer save from Stephen Bywater after the break.

But the Bees striker – now at Birmingham – did get on the scoresheet from the penalty spot after a sustained period of pressure from the Griffin Park club.

Undeterred by the setback, though, the Owls went up the other end and restored their one-goal lead four minutes after conceding.

Defender Miguel Llera met Treacy’s delivery from a corner and glanced his header inside the far post to spark scenes of joy from the capacity away following.

And the Owls held onto that lead to ensure the battle for automatic promotion would go down to the wire, in one of the most extraordinary conclusions to a league campaign.
