Youngsters turn video experts with SWFC

Posted on: Wed 07 Jul 2010

A group of local youngsters turned video analysts for the day after taking part in a master class at Sheffield Wednesday's Study Support Centre.

The centre, which is based at Hillsborough Stadium, teamed up with national education programme Aimhigher to hold a day of learning aimed at encouraging young people into higher education.

Year 9 and 10 boys from five Sheffield schools - Wisewood, Myers Grove, Birley, Chaucer Business & Enterprise College, and Meadowhead School & Languages College - spent a day at Sheffield Wednesday becoming video experts.

The youngsters paid a visit to the club's Training Ground where they undertook a 90 minute training session while snapping photographs, capturing footage and taking notes. Then it was back to the Study Support Centre where they created visual coaching manuals showing how to improve your football skills.

The centre is part of the national Playing for Success (PfS) initiative, which aims to raise children's literacy and numeracy levels using state-of-the-art ICT equipment and the inspirational surroundings of a professional sports club.

Co-ordinator Mike Taylor said: "The kids had a great time learning how to use the video software and are very proud of their finished projects. The master class not only gave them a chance to improve their IT and literacy skills but also got their pulses racing with a 90 minute workout."

The day of activities is just one of many being held at Playing for Success centres in Sheffield with marketing, digital media, web design and event management tutorials also taking place as part of the Aimhigher campaign.

Mike added: "We are extremely pleased to be working with Aimhigher and giving young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the knowledge and confidence needed to go on into higher education."
