Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is launching a new campaign to encourage supporters to go green in a bid to help the environment.
The scheme, in partnership with company CLEVER CO2e, aims to promote the importance of being environmentally friendly to fans. It will also see Sheffield Wednesday working hard to reduce our own carbon footprint and raising funds for green projects in the region.
Managing director of CLEVER CO2e Carl Hughes said: "Sheffield Wednesday FC have taken the lead on the issue of climate change within football. They already have an outstanding record when it comes to community involvement and support, this has been proven again by the club now tackling climate change and wanting to make a difference to their city."
Throughout the season the club will earmark a number of matches to promote the green message to supporters; these will be split into CLEVER Carbon and CLEVER Sustain games.
CLEVER Carbon matches will be foot-printed to find out the environmental impact involved in hosting a game at Hillsborough and then offset to make the match carbon neutral. They are also designed to raise awareness and get Owls fans thinking how they can reduce their own footprints.
While CARBON Sustain games will bring together the club and its fans to address global warming on a local level. At designated games a small fee will be added to ticket prices to raise funds for an environmental project in the city.
The club will reinvest the money raised into green projects within Sheffield schools and will hold a Dragon's Den style event at Hillsborough. Youngsters will be give the chance pitch their proposals to a panel of experts and the winning school will able to make their idea a reality.
The club's CSR development manager Spencer Taylor said: "I am delighted that Sheffield Wednesday will be raising awareness about the effects of climate change this season and giving schools in the area the opportunity to come up with their own environmental solutions - I look forward to seeing what they come up with."
