Community programme welcome new patron

Posted on: Fri 17 Feb 2012

The Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme are delighted to announce an exciting link with Sheffield's outstanding young boxer, Barry 'Kid Galahad' Awad.

The talented youngster has been invited to become a patron of the Community Programme, a role which Awad has keenly accepted.

On Saturday, live on FIVE at 9.55pm, Kid Galahad will take on world title challenger Jason Booth in the biggest fight of his life, but away from the ring, an exciting link-up with the Owls has already been sealed.

Spencer Taylor, SWFC Community Programme CSR Development Manager, said: "Both the Community Programme and Barry can look forward to some exciting times ahead in the near future. We have known Barry a long time and he has been a really active member in our school projects. He has also been involved in our work linking community and education to sports opportunities.

'The club, through its Community Programme, will support Barry as much as possible. He is a great lad with an infectious personality and great enthusiasm. Barry is dedicated to his sport and we will always look to help young people with that ethic.

"The Community Programme has some big plans for the future and undoubtedly Barry will continue to be involved in our work for years to come. We are delighted to welcome him as a patron of our association as he is such an exciting young talent who has emerged from a very difficult social background to be on the brink of success."

Kid Galahad said: "I am proud to become a patron of Sheffield Wednesday's Community Programme, which does great work all across the region, especially by helping kids who might not have the best opportunities or best backgrounds. The club's work helps kids engage and find something positive to do and gives them focus, much like boxing has done for me. Both myself and other members of the gym, especially Richard Towers, have done a lot of work with the club and it is an association I am very proud of.

'In the future, I hope that people will look at me as not only an excellent boxer but also a positive role model for the community. I come from a background surrounded by violence, drugs and gangs and so I know how important it is for major organisations like Sheffield Wednesday to go into communities and offer their help. That's why I plan on being involved with the SWFC Community Programme as much as I can and I hope that both parties will gain from our association."
