Owls boss Brian Laws was delighted to see his side triumph 3-1 over Rotherham United on Thursday evening.

Wednesday pushed through to the second round of the Carling Cup despite having gone a goal down to the Millers in the first half.

And Laws was full of praise for the League Two opposition in the local derby: "These games aren't easy and credit to Rotherham," he said. "They really had the adrenaline pumping, they got at us in the first half.

"I have been in that situation before as a manager playing against a higher level team and you try to get an early goal, try to upset the opposition and maybe you can get a win through it and of course it was going according to plan for Rotherham. I thought they were excellent in the first half and I am not going to take anything away from them. They had the edge in the first 20 minutes and then we started to move the ball a bit better."

Laws continued: "Obviously the goal we conceded was a disappointing one but you respond and I thought the players did well, held their nerve, got a great goal, well worked with good passing and a fantastic shot by Glenn Whelan.

"Come the second half we were in total control of the game and came out quite comfortable winners but, having said that, our goalkeeper has had to pull off two fantastic saves, particularly in the first half - they were outstanding.

"That will probably eradicate his disappointment from Saturday of missing a ball that he would have probably saved a thousand times in his sleep. He has had a great performance and that has given everyone a real boost going into the game against Wolves."

The Wednesday manager was highly encouraged by the way all of his players performed after the heavy defeat at Ipswich on Saturday and will see his side's confidence buoyed going into the clash with Wolves on Sunday.

"We have got character, we have got nerve and the steel to stand up and be counted," Laws enthused.

"Wade Small has had a terrific game on the left-hand side, he has given me some food for thought. We lost Chris Brunt to West Bromwich but we have to respond and the players have certainly picked themselves up. They are disappointed to lose the quality in Chris Brunt but Wade Small has certainly given me something to think about ahead of the weekend."
