Sheffield Wednesday manager, Brian Laws, was buoyant after seeing his side overcome Hartlepool United at Hillsborough on Tuesday night to reach the third round of the Carling Cup.

It was a long, drawn-out affair with Yoann Folly eventually netting the winning goal in the final minute of extra time to secure a 2-1 win. But the Owls boss was pleased with the nature of the win.

"I am delighted with the response that I have had from the players," Laws enthused. "This isn't an easy game tonight. Hartlepool would have been coming here thinking: 'look at Sheffield Wednesday, they're struggling, conceding goals for fun, it's a great opportunity to get through to the next round, put pressure on them, get an early goal and see if they cave in.'

"This was a big test for us yet the win was thoroughly deserved. It was a long time coming and we had 35 efforts at goal, which is a massive amount. I have not been involved with a team that has had that many shots at goal yet we are only showing two goals for it.

Laws continued: "A lot of it was down to their goalkeeper, who made some magnificent saves. The score line could have been anything but the response was excellent.

"We had a stern talking to after the Charlton game; I was displeased and did not enjoy the second half and tonight I wanted to see the performance and effort they should have produced in the second half at Charlton. They chased and harried, I have a lot of fatigued players in there but if they had done that on Saturday they would have had three points as well."
