Pressure off for Laws
"We'll go there with confidence, the pressure is on them to perform and if they don't, then we will seize on that and get a result."
Owls boss Brian Laws issued this message ahead of Saturday's trip to St Andrews and believes that coming back with a result is possible despite Birmingham's good run of form in the league.
The Blues leapfrogged Wolves on Tuesday evening and now sit top of the table in the Championship after snatching a late winner against Crystal Palace.
But Laws is adamant his side can reproduce the performance they displayed against Charlton and Swansea to hit back immediately from Tuesday night's defeat to Barnsley.
He said: "I believe that going into the Birmingham game, this is anything but a giveaway and we can get a result. Everybody will be expecting Birmingham to beat us because they are top of the league.
"They aren't playing particularly well but things are going for them and they are scoring regularly particularly in the late stages of the game," he continued.
"If you look at our away form they will think this is a banker, but the only people that do think we can get something out of it is ourselves. We can go into it a bit more relaxed, the pressure is on them so let's go out and play some football."
Laws does have injury concerns ahead of this weekend's clash though and will not be able to make a decision on his team until late on.
"We've picked up injuries in the Barnsley game so we are struggling at the moment to decide who is fit and available and we're going to have to leave it until the last moment," Laws said.
"Certainly Richard Wood comes into that category as does Mark Beevers, Marcus Tudgay, Deon Burton - they're all carrying knocks and it's something we will have to ponder over," the manager said. "Steve Watson should be ok because he came through the last 45 minutes against Barnsley and he's fine so I don't see him as an issue."
Laws was forced into making five changes from the side that beat Sheffield United on Sunday for the midweek game with Barnsley and stressed the situation was not ideal but strongly denied that he left any key players out who could have featured in the match.
"I don't want to leave anybody out and I certainly don't want to leave out my best players. Look at what happened at Barnsley, you leave your best players out and you're going to have a problem. It's not a case of me leaving them out until Saturday, they just weren't available."
He continued: "People think we are wrapping them up in cotton wool to save them for Birmingham but let me tell you, ask me which game do you believe you could have won with our best eleven, I would have said the Barnsley game, so I would be crackers to rest anybody for Saturday's game. I'd rather them miss Saturday's game and play against Barnsley so that tells you the problems we have got."
Returning striker Akpo Sodje came on against the Blades on Sunday and could be set for a place on the bench this weekend: "He was always going to be rested for one of the games (Barnsley or Sheffield United) because he is low down on fitness. We chose to play him against Sheffield United, he ticked all the boxes, got the crowd going and hopefully he'll be involved this weekend."
Birmingham of course are among the favourites for promotion with some impressive results and crucial late goals and Laws believes the best is yet to come from the league leaders.
"It is scary to think they are not quite at their best but top of the league," Laws said. "They have a high wage bill and in the last few games they've had £10m worth of talent on the bench so they are a force but they are not playing as they should be. They haven't scored a lot of goals; they have just scored them at the right time."
