Laws pleased with Owls response

Posted on: Sat 18 Apr 2009

Brian Laws has revealed his satisfaction with the way in which the Owls bounced back from two defeats over Easter to sink Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints are now all but condemned to League One football following their 2-0 loss at Hillsborough, where Laws felt his Wednesday side were worthy winners.

He said: "I think last Monday at QPR was the angriest I have been since I came to Sheffield Wednesday.

"It wasn't so much the defeat but the way in which we conceded the goals and I really needed a response today.

"I got the response I was looking for and I was pleased for the fans, who have waited a while to see us win again at home.

"We have been excellent at home for most of the season but I felt we needed a win and it was nice to get that, with a clean sheet on top."

Laws outlined in midweek his desire to return to winning ways, albeit at the expense of a Southampton side desperate for points at the wrong end of the table.

And the gaffer took pride from the fact that the team proved as good as his word.

He added: "We knew we had to be in the right frame of mind, Southampton are in a very similar kind of position to where we were last season and they were always going to give everything they had.

"This was never going to be an easy game. We should have been two or three up by half time so there was a little bit of concern but the second goal after the break finished it off."

Laws reserved the final word for loanee striker Luke Varney, who signed off his month-long Owls stint with the goals that decided the game.

Varney now returns to parent club Derby and will figure for the Rams when they face Reading at Pride Park on Tuesday.

"I was really pleased for Luke Varney," said Laws. "He fully deserved his goals and they were the reward for the hard work he has put into this football club in the short time he has been with us from Derby.

"He's a very willing player who works exceptionally hard and a player who can score goals, as he has showed us today.

"I would like to thank him for his efforts for Sheffield Wednesday and wish him the best of luck back at Derby County."
