Brian Laws was delighted to finish the 2008/09 season on a high with Jermaine Johnson wrapping up a 1-0 win against Cardiff City with an outstanding drive.

The result pushed Cardiff out of the play-offs and meant Wednesday secured a top half finish with 61 points. The Owls also finished with the best home defensive record in the Championship.

"We are delighted to finish on a high and I think every manager will tell you that if you haven't got anything to play for then you at least have to give your home supporters something to go away with a smile on their faces for," Laws said after the game.

"You could tell from the start this was not going to be 'just an end of season game', there was a good tempo about the place and you always need to give something to set the place alight - it took a magnificent goal from Jermaine Johnson to do that."

Commenting on knocking Cardiff out of the top six, Laws said: "If I was Preston or Burnley I would expect every other Championship football club to approach the last game of the season in the right manner. It is a competition that takes place over 46 games and it would not be right to finish by switching off for the last game.

"We have to do an honest job on the pitch and that's what we did. We won the game, we did two clubs a massive favour and disappointed another one but that is the beauty of the game."

"The attitude of the players has been top drawer all season and if I can get the right players to bolster our squad in the summer then there is no reason why we can't be aiming for the play-offs with a bit more consistency."
