Laws looking for Owls reaction

Posted on: Fri 25 Sep 2009

Sheffield Wednesday manager, Brian Laws, is seeking a positive reaction from his players this weekend following last Friday's derby defeat to Sheffield United.

The Owls turned in a spirited second half performance at Bramall Lane to emerge with plenty of credit from S2 but their dismal display before the break triggered ultimate defeat.

As a result, Laws is looking for a return to winning ways ahead of Saturday's home clash with top-six occupants Cardiff City.

He said: "I want a reaction now. We have got to get back in the groove and get some wins under the belt.

"I watched Cardiff at Aston Villa in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night and they are a good side. But they have had a bit of a blip in the league and let's hope that continues on Saturday."

Laws makes no bones over the problems currently affecting his side. While extremely effective going forward - only two teams in the division have scored more goals - the Owls have developed a porous streak at the back to undo much of their work on the attack.

The manager continued: "The important thing is identifying what has gone wrong and the problems are very obvious to the eye. There's no hidden agenda there, we know exactly what we need to do.

"It's not the initial impact of a set play, it's the second phase. The knockdowns are being won by the opposition and they are scoring goals from that. We have to cut that out and if we can, we have a chance of winning games.

"We are playing some extremely good football, probably as good as it's been since I have been at this football club. I've been delighted with that kind of output. We've been scoring goals, we look dangerous, but we have to tighten up those defensive moments."

Laws concluded by issuing a battle cry to Wednesdayites ahead of 'Blue and White Day' at Hillsborough on Saturday.

He added: "It's important that we get a good start and the first goal. And one of the main ingredients we rely on is the supporters because we need them to be right behind us, vocal and noisy, because they do make an impact and an impression."
