Irvine encouraged by comeback

Posted on: Thu 18 Mar 2010

Alan Irvine was pleased to see his players come back from 2-0 down to secure a point on his return to Preston.

The Owls were 1-0 down at half time and the hosts doubled their lead within eight minutes of the re-start but Wednesday came back with two strikes in quick succession from Tommy Miller and Marcus Tudgay to earn a draw.

"It was a great response, people are telling me it's been a long time since they've come back from two goals down," the Wednesday manager said. "I am delighted that we were able to do it but I was disappointed we were in that position in the first place. It was a much better performance in the second half but we need to make sure we don't let that first half performance happen again this season.

"We need to make sure we cope in those situations because you will go behind in games and it is important to have the mental strength to come down."

One disappointment for Wednesday though was the loss of Jermaine Johnson within the first ten minutes of the match and Irvine believed that had an adverse effect on his team in the first half. Johnson's hamstring injury will be assessed ahead of the weekend match against Derby.

"The loss of Jermaine Johnson early on was probably a psychological blow for our players because he has been excellent for us in recent games. He is a real threat for us and gives us a cutting edge but you have to cope in those circumstances."

Overall Irvine was pleased with his side's comeback though and will look to build on the result at Deepdale.

"I thought we might even score a winner as we had some good chances late on but late on Preston got some corners and they are dangerous from set pieces so that was a concern but we weathered that and deserved at least a point," the Owls boss insisted.

"I know Andy Lonergan will be criticised for the first goal he conceded but he made a fantastic save just at the death to stop us winning it. He and Lee Grant are both very good goalkeepers and they showed that tonight.

"Marcus Tudgay finished the second goal superbly because Lonergan is excellent in one-on-one situations and he just lifted it over the top of him into the net."
