Irvine welcomes experienced duo

Posted on: Fri 13 Aug 2010

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine welcomes back experienced duo Marcus Tudgay and Chris Sedgwick for the trip to Colchester on Saturday.

Both players sat out the midweek Carling Cup win over Bury with minor knocks but will return when the Owls play their first game at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Irvine said: "They're important players. I think the two of them did well in the first game against Dagenham and it's good to have them back.

"We didn't have them for the Bury game in midweek and perhaps if it had been a do or die game, we might have risked them but there is no point in taking any risks.

"I'm delighted the two of them are okay now and they will be in contention for a place on Saturday."

Irvine is expecting a tough test against Colchester, who kicked off the new season with a 2-2 draw at Exeter before beating Hereford 3-0 on the road in the Carling Cup.

He said: "They have had a decent start - a draw away from home and then a very good win at a difficult venue against Hereford. They will be looking forward to a home game. Colchester is not an easy place to go and they are a team expecting to be competing at the top end of our division. So it will be a big test for us."

In the bigger picture, Irvine is delighted with the two wins from two for Wednesday so far but insists there is room for improvement all over the park. And that, he says, will come in time when the raft of new signings slot into place:

"In terms of being exactly how I would like it, we are some way away from that. There have been some pleasing parts in both games and there have been some disappointment parts in both games.

"But it's a new team, we had five debuts on Tuesday on top of the new players who were playing their second game for the club. We have nine new players in and it will take time but in the meantime, we need to win games."
