Irvine disappointed with Owls exit

Posted on: Tue 24 Aug 2010

Alan Irvine has expressed his 'bitter disappointment' following the Owls' Carling Cup exit to Scunthorpe on Tuesday.

Wednesday went out 4-2 at Glanford Park and Irvine cited key moments either side of half time that contributed to their downfall.

He said: "Goals change games and we lost two, just before half time and just after. We gave possession away very cheaply for the first goal and that made a big difference to the dressing room at half time.

"It was right on the whistle, then we conceded again a few minutes after the break. It was really disappointing because I thought we played well in the first half and had a great chance to take the lead, then we might have seen a different game.

"But football is all about ifs and maybes but what is certain is that we are out of the competition and that has left me bitterly disappointed."

Irvine made six changes at Scunthorpe and says that only 'one or two' made a decent claim for a shirt when Wednesday return to league action at Hartlepool on Saturday.

He added: "We have a good squad here and I sent out a team that I thought was very capable of getting a result.

"It's not like it was a team of kids, they are good players and if you are asking me did they stake a claim for Saturday, I would say that one or two did and one or two didn't."

Skipper Darren Purse was an enforced absentee with a tight calf but is expected to be fit for trip to Victoria Park.
