Irvine delighted with O'Connor contribution

Posted on: Thu 02 Sep 2010

Alan Irvine expressed his delight at progressing into the next round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy following the Owls' 2-1 victory over Notts County on Wednesday night.

A first half brace from James O'Connor proved to be the difference, with Irvine delighted at the midfielder's contribution.

He said: "I thought there were impressive individual performances all over the pitch. James in particular put himself about well and deserved his goals.

"The changes that we made came in and all did well, and it has given us a lot to think about heading into the weekend's game at Brentford."

O'Connor went close to capping an impressive performance with a hat trick, but his injury time effort curled narrowly past the post.

He added: "It would have been nice for James to have scored in the final minutes, but it wasn't to be. I can't really blame him for having go, but I don't think Gary Teale, who had raced 70 yards to support him, will be as forgiving as I've been!"

"It should have been a bit more comfortable I thought. We were terrific at times and played some really entertaining football.

"We obviously started the in a fantastic fashion scoring an early goal, but I was disappointed with the way we conceded and gave them a chance to get back into the game."

Ben Davies' rasping free kick from the right angle of the penalty area fizzed past Nicky Weaver in the Wednesday goal, as the visitors halved the deficit.

Irvine said: "It was something we had talked about prior to the game. We knew Davies was dangerous from set pieces and that we would have to be disciplined in that final third and limit the number of fouls we commit. We conceded a free kick in a dangerous position and got punished, but that shouldn't take the shine off an extremely satisfying performance."
