Must do better

Posted on: Sun 05 Sep 2010

Alan Irvine believes his Wednesday side deserved exactly what they got at Brentford on Sunday - their first league defeat of the 2010/11 campaign.

Charlie MacDonald's strike just before half time proved sufficient for the Bees to post their first success and climb from the bottom of the table as a result.

Despite enjoying more possession after the break, the Owls struggled to make a breakthrough and left Griffin Park nursing a maiden loss.

Irvine said: "We got what we deserved and that was not a lot. We huffed and puffed but didn't really create a great deal.

"We underhit our passes and were well below the standards we have set during the early part of the season. We must do better."

The Wednesday chief instantly rebuffed any talk of complacency given that the two sides occupied opposite slots in the League One table ahead of the live Sky TV clash:

"That was never going to enter anyone's thinking. I said in the Press last week that I thought Brentford were in a false position and that they are a very capable side.

"And full credit to Brentford today. They played very well and fully deserved the win.

"For us, it's about bouncing back, that's what we have to do and we will try to do that against Carlisle at Hillsborough next Saturday."
