The North Stand

The first North Stand, built between 1899 and 1903, finally made way in 1960 to a brand new construction that was opened by Sir Stanley Rous, the FA Chairman, on 23rd August 1961.

At the time it was England's best new stand since the building of the East Stand at Highbury, in the 1930s, and it was the first cantilever stand in Britain to run the full length of a pitch (the second of any type after that at Scunthorpe United).

In his book, The Football Grounds of Great Britain, Simon Inglis describes it thus: "There is not a misplaced line in this remarkable stand. From any angle (it) is quite breathtaking. It is like an architect's model of the dream stand of the future, a space age stand."

Current capacity - 9,255
