On Saturday 15 April 1989, 96 supporters died at Hillsborough while attending the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. A permanent memorial to those who lost their lives is situated at the main entrance to the ground, off Parkside Road.

Inscribed on the memorial are the following words:

"In memory of the 96 men, women and children who tragically died and the countless people whose lives were changed forever.
