Sheffield Wednesday Ladies
SWLFC History
Sheffield Wednesday Ladies FC were formed at the Star Inn Public House in Rotherham 1971 following a charity match between men and women at the pub. The team was originally called Star Ladies. Shortly afterwards the side joined the Sheffield Ladies League. When this league was disbanded they joined the Nottinghamshire Ladies League which was later renamed the East Midlands Ladies League.
In 1983 they became members of the women's Premier League. They became Sheffield Wednesday Ladies in 1985 and when the FA created the AXA FA Women's League Sheffield Wednesday Ladies became founder members and continued in this league until 2005 when, after a difficult season, they were relagated into the Women's Northern Combination League.
The Owls spent two seasons at this level, finishing third in the first season and rampaging to win the championship in the second, gaining promotion back to the top flight, the FA Women's Premier League. SWLFC also beat Doncaster Rovers Belles in the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Cup final to complete the double in the 2006/07 season.
The first year back in the big time for the Owls Ladies was a succesful one under the new management team of Daniel Duke and Luke Sadler. The squad went from strength to strength, finishing sixth and finishing as runnners-up in the County Cup.
