A Steven MacLean goal earned the Owls a 3-2 victory over London opposition for the second successive home game, as the Scot struck in injury time to earn a dramatic win over Crystal Palace.

MacLean came off the bench to net in the first minute of time added on after Marcus Tudgay's shot and a Graham Coughlan header cancelled out strikes from ex-Owl Shefki Kuqi and Tom Soares.

The goal was the former Rangers striker's first in 18 months from open play and the typical poacher's effort was reward for a performance in which Wednesday made plenty of chances.

They came out of the traps flying with Deon Burton driving wide and volleying just over the top, while Tudgay's low shot and fierce drive both brought saves out of Scott Flinders. Chris Brunt and Wade Small also tested the former Barnsley keeper from distance before Palace got a 21st minute breakthrough.

Wade Small

John Hills failed to cut out Ben Watson's long throughball and Kuqi pounced to drive a shot past Brad Jones at his near post. The Finnish international sidefooted wide soon afterwards while Tudgay couldn't get the required power on his header when the Owls responded.

Hills had a long distance effort deflected wide and Kenny Lunt drove over as Wednesday looked to hit back before the break. And they got their reward in the first minute of stoppage time prior to the interval, as Tudgay did excellently in the box to restore parity. Flinders' short goalkick out of his hands dropped way short of the halfway line and was seized upon by Brunt who delivered from the left. The ball landed with Tudgay via Small but it looked like the chance had been lost, only for the Owls number seven to retrieve possession and prod in from ten yards.

Marcus Tudgay

It took a timely tackle from Madjid Bougherra to deny Soares in the Owls area after the Algerian's initial indecision allowed the Palace man to race towards goal. But Wednesday were unable to stop the midfield man just past the hour, as he picked up Clinton Morrison's pass and waltzed and shimmied through the home rearguard before slotting past Jones.

Small fired over soon after following a miskick from Tudgay from Lunt's cross and a combination of Flinders and Danny Butterfield smuggled Bougherra's header off the line from a Lunt free-kick. Tudgay was unable to get close enough when Coughlan knocked the ball across goal after the ball skimmed off Burton's head.  But the Owls did pull themselves level again in the 74th minute when Coughlan climbed highest to firmly head Lunt's free-kick past the despairing Flinders and into the roof of the net.

Graham Coughlan

Brunt forced Flinders to save with a low effort that swerved a little on route to goal and the winger slipped as he shot for goal and his effort flew over the top. However MacLean was in the right place at the right time to win with almost the last kick for Wednesday, sliding in to volley home from close range after Bougherra flicked on Frank Simek's throw-in.
