Wednesday posted an amazing seventh successive draw thanks to defender Tommy Spurr and exited the Championship bottom three as a result.
Visitors Plymouth led from the second minute through Peter Halmosi's deflected free kick but Spurr smashed in a thundering second half volley from distance to give the Owls a fully deserved share of the spoils.
SWFC now head to relegation rivals Blackpool on Saturday two places and one point clear of danger with just three games to play.
Brian Laws made two changes from the side that drew with local rivals Sheffield United last Tuesday. Burton O'Brien came into the engine room in place of Graham Kavanagh while Peter Gilbert slotted in at right back for Steve Watson.
Wednesday got off to the worst possible start and conceded inside two minutes after Adam Bolder fouled Nadjim Abdou 20 yards from goal. Halmosi stepped up and tried a curling effort that failed to clear the wall, but instead deflected high off Deon Burton and wide of Lee Grant between the sticks.
The Owls came within a whisker of drawing level eight minutes in, with Burton again at the centre of the action. Jermaine Johnson broke free down the right flank and sent over an accurate low cross from which Burton just failed to get sufficient purchase and the ball rolled agonisingly wide.
Johnson was close to the target with a fierce angled drive three minutes later and Burton almost scampered past keeper Luke McCormick to fashion a clear sight on goal. Ben Sahar then sent an improvised chip into the grateful arms of McCormick as Wednesday upped the attacking ante.
Bolder broke free of the Plymouth defence following a clever feed from Sahar but failed to trouble McCormick. Then Wednesday earned a free kick right on the edge of the box in the 27th minute but O'Brien could only sky a piledriver into the West Stand.
The hosts continued to dominate and Johnson blasted wide three minutes before the break after good work down the left by Spurr. Sahar went close from ten yards, pouncing on Burton's deflected free kick, but the ball was deflected over the bar for a corner.
The Owls left the field at half time to a rousing reception having dominated the opening period, with the only thing missing a goal.
Wednesday went all out to reverse that situation after the resumption, bossing possession early in the half, but it was Plymouth that came close with the next chance. Jermaine Easter got sight of goal 12 yards out and Grant had to be alert to divert the striker's prodded shot wide for a corner.
Laws threw on Bartosz Slusarski and Wade Small for Sahar and Johnson midway through the half but the Owls struggled to break down a resolute Pilgrims defence that dropped deeper as the game progressed.
Spurr picked up a loose ball from the left angle of the area and looped a shot narrowly over the bar before Franck Songo'o forced McCormick into action from a long range free kick.
But still the Plymouth goal remained intact. Burton twice went close in as many minutes, first with a glancing header from Spurr's long throw and then a left-footed drive with the Kop goal at his mercy.
Finally, with just nine minutes to go, the Owls deservedly drew level through the unlikely figure of Spurr. Loitering 25 yards out, the defender controlled neatly on the chest and fired in a rasping volley that flew past McCormick and into the top corner to restore parity.
Songo'o and O'Brien tested McCormick right at the last and Mackie forced Grant into a diving save but honours remained even as the demotion dogfight heads towards boiling point.
