Sheffield Wednesday will face Derby County in an FA Cup third round replay at Hillsborough after their Premier League hosts fought back from a two-goal deficit.

The Owls took the lead through Mark Beever's first professional goal before Marcus Tudgay made it 2-0. But Derby were back level by half time and Wednesday will have to beat Paul Jewell's men at Hillsborough if they are to progress to the fourth round.

The Owls made three changes to the team that beat Preston North End 2-1 on New Year's Day. Marcus Tudgay and Francis Jeffers started up front in place of Akpo Sodje, who is out with an ankle problem, and Deon Burton dropped to the bench.

Etienne Esajas started on the left with Yoann Folly not involved in the squad, having handed in a transfer request days before the cup clash. Meanwhile, defender Richard Wood returned to the bench, having been out with a shoulder injury since October.

There was a lively opening to the encounter at Pride Park and, after a handful of half-chances falling at either end, Wednesday took the lead in the eighth minute as Mark Beevers scored his first professional goal for the Owls.

Derby would be disappointed by the way they conceded from a set piece delivered long into the box. Beevers struck from a knock-down by Tudgay but goalkeeper, Lewis Price, could only take some of the power out of the effort as he saw the ball agonisingly trickle over the goal line behind him.

Backed by a strong travelling support, the Owls were looking comfortable in Derbyshire and only had one moment of concern at the back after quarter of an hour when Craig Fagan produced a glaring miss.

Eddie Lewis curled in a cross from the left which Kenny Miller headed on to the top of the crossbar. The ball fell to Fagan five yards out in a central position but the striker snatched at his shot and launched the ball high over the bar.

The Owls extended their lead against the Premier League's lowest placed club in the 23rd minute and it was a sweet moment for former Derby man, Marcus Tudgay. Beating the offside trap as he latched onto Lee Bullen's through-ball, Tudgay crisply finished low beyond Price to end a 12-match goal drought, which stretched back to October.

Wednesday were in confident mood and produced some good probing football. The midfield pair of Burton O'Brien and Glenn Whelan looked purposeful while wide men Esajas and Johnson were providing useful outlets on the flanks. Tudgay and Francis Jeffers meanwhile showed some intricate touches around the edge of the box.

Grant had to be alert to make a decent save from Miller after he had forced his way into the box on 27 minutes. But Tudgay sent a good header just over at the other end before Miller got past Richard Hinds and lifted a shot just over.

The Rams pulled one back on 38 minutes though as Fagan curled in a ball from the right. Miller beat Beevers to bring the ball down inside the penalty area and finished low and hard to Grant's right.

Wednesday saw their lead dissolve just a minute before half time when they failed to deal with a corner and Giles Barnes fired past numerous bodies into the net. It was a disappointing way to conclude the opening period for Wednesday but the score line reflected an entertaining 45 minutes of football from two teams struggling in their respective divisions.

The second half soon bubbled into life and Lewis was presented a good opportunity within a minute of the restart. Receiving the ball in space in the box, the midfielder's first touch let him down and Hinds was eventually able to clear.

At the other end, Jermaine Johnson showed tricky feet on the right and fed Whelan, who curled a teasing ball to the far post for Tudgay to head down but straight at Price, who held comfortably.

There was a moment of concern for Wednesday just after the hour-mark when former loan defender, Michael Johnson, on as substitute, ghosted up from the left back position to head just wide of Grant's left-hand post. The Derby man's namesake, Jermaine had done just enough to put him off target.

Chances were perhaps not as frequent after the break, despite the endeavour from both sides. After Esajas had drilled a low free kick narrowly wide of the near post on 72 minutes, Derby countered and Grant produced an outstanding save from Gary Teale, who was looking to convert Lewis' low centre.

Substitute, Deon Burton, thought he had netted a late winner when he fired home from close range from an O'Brien free kick on 83 minutes.

If anything, Wednesday looked the most likely to nick a decisive goal in the late stages of the game but it was not to be and the Owls will host the replay on January 15.
