The Owls made it back-to-back victories on Tuesday evening beating Blackpool 2-1 at Bloomfield Road - continuing Alan Irvine's strong start as Wednesday manager.
After a goalless first half, Wednesday took the lead on 71 minutes through loan midfielder Tom Soares before Leon Clarke wrapped up the points with seven minutes remaining.
The Seasiders grabbed a late consolation through Charlie Adam deep into time added on but that crucial win, the Owls third away win of the season, meant Wednesday leapfrogged Reading out of the bottom three.
Owls boss Irvine opted to stick with the same side that posted three points against Barnsley on Saturday.
Leon Clarke and Richard Hinds, who both missed out at Oakwell, were back in the squad taking up places on the bench.
In a cold evening at Bloomfield Road, there were few chances in the early exchanges, the first of which fell to the Seasiders.
David Vaughan's corner on six minutes was dangerous and Alex Baptiste rose well to head goalwards from close range and it needed Michael Gray to head wide.
Three minutes later, Blackpool came closer still to making the breakthrough. It was Vaughan's delivery from the left once more that gave cause for concern for Wednesday as Daniel Nardiello put his header just wide of Lee Grant's left hand post.
Blackpool's threat in the air from set pieces was becoming apparent in the opening stages of the first half - particularly with striker Ben Burgess, who was winning most aerial challenges.
Despite the hosts enjoying the lion share of possession, Wednesday almost took the lead when Jermaine Johnson found Marcus Tudgay with a low cross but the latter dragged his shot just wide.
The Owls were conceding a fair quantity of free kicks and almost paid the price when Charlie Adam whipped in a cross from the left from which Ian Evatt connected well but his shot struck Grant's near post.
It was end-to-end action for a brief spell as Johnson picked up the ball on the halfway line, using his pace to race past his marker, but placed his shot wide. That was the last action for the Jamaican, who limped off with what seemed a hamstring injury moments later.
Wednesday had a half chance in the closing stages of the opening period through substitute Leon Clarke. Gray's pinpoint cross from the left picked out the big striker, who powered a firm header over the bar.
The Owls came within a whisker of taking the lead seven minutes after the restart through Tudgay.
The striker did superbly well to control the ball in Pool's 18-yard box from Gray's cross and, after taking a touch, struck a half volley against the frame of the goal and the hosts were lucky to stay level.
But with the home crowd roaring their side on, the Seasiders nearly grabbed that crucial first goal through second half sub Keith Southern. The midfielder got good purchase on his strike from 20 yards which drifted just wide of target.
The game was very much in the balance going into the final 20 minutes but it was Wednesday who stole into the lead on 71 minutes through loanee Tom Soares.
The midfielder took the ball in his stride from the left his curled effort took a slight deflection that lifted over Paul Rachubka and into the net.
Blackpool were looking for a quick response to going behind and certainly had chances to do but lacked the final product in front of goal.
Grant was to thank for preserving Wednesday's lead as Gary Taylor-Fletcher was clean through on goal but the Owls keeper stood up and saved well.
But Wednesday put the game beyond doubt in their next attack as Potter whipped in a freekick from the left that Clarke glanced past Rachubka to give the visitors some much welcome daylight.
Blackpool hit back with a consolation goal five minutes into time added on through Adam but that didn't effect the three points heading back to S6 as the Owls held on for a fantastic result.
